More For Less

There are some great price reductions and upgraded products at Apple this morning.

[Later: Faster processors, two megs of level three cache, all the wireless crap, and the price drops and new screen lineups are all so great. I can’t believe how cheap those giant screens are getting. So much closer to winding up on my desk someday.]

You know what stops a lot of people from switching (back) to Apple? Repurchasing all that software! I’ve spent thousands of dollars to go legit on all of my Windows software, so they’d have to GIVE me an Apple if they want me to use it at this point… If they were really serious about getting people to switch, they’d work out deals with the major software companies (Microsoft, Adobe, Macromedia, etc.) where you get your Mac software MUCH cheaper if you’re a bonafide switcherooniedoonie (or some such designation) and you’ve registered your PC copies. That might spur sales…hmmm, I wonder if anyone from Apple is reading this… ;-)

Jessyca: At the very least, I think it’s entirely possible that these companies would allow you to do a cross-platform upgrade so that when you Illustrator 8 (or whatever) came out for the Mac and you were on Illustrator 7 for the PC, you could just pay the upgrade price to move over.

Walt: When does your 20” LCD arrive?

Does anyone have general Canon Digital Elph vs. Sony PowerShot comments? I was looking at an upgrade from my current Canon S100 to one of the two and was hoping for comments (like interface, size of the camera, and photo quality) that might tilt the scale one way or the other aside from the fact that new new Canon S230 is 3.x MP and the new Sony is 4.x. Thanks.

I have the S230 and I love it. It is a little more expense then any other 3 meg cameras but its really small. The picture come out clean (or at least I think so) and it is easy to use. The only thing that it lack is all the manual control that the A30 might have.

Sam, did you compare to the 4 MP Sony? Thanks!

i love the size ofmy elph

Sean if you’re looking for a 4 MP Canon in the $500 area I’d recommend comparing the PowerShot S40. It’s an excellent camera.

Well, at least everyone is consistently recommending Canon. :-) Thanks, all. Walt: S40 looks great but is much larger than the Elphs like the 230S. The Elph fits into the front pocket of my jeans.

Well, as Walt can attest to, I’m really careful to always use the Red Eye feature now. In general, I frequenly force the flash anyhow.

Sean: I was looking only at the 3 meg camera. And my limite was about $400. So the S230 was prefect. I do know someone that has the Sony one but the 3 meg version. And its also just as nice. But I think the Canons are better
