We made a point to go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and tried to see pretty much everything, including the behind-the-scenes tour.

My main camera’s battery turned out not to be as charged as I thought it was so I spent a lot more time goofing off with the little video camera than I normally do. Expect to see more videos of otters appearing on Flickr soon. :)

Over time, I’ve noticed that as the distance between my desk and the kitchen decreases, the number of trips I make to the chocolate drawer has increased. Exponentially.

So this last week, every time I wanted to get some M&Ms, or a Mini Baby Ruth, or a York Peppermint Pattie, I got a glass of water instead. I drank a tremendous amount of water. Gonna try to keep this trend going for as long as I can.

My temperature was extremely high as well and for the next several weeks, I had a fever and just felt exhausted all the time. After the third week and several doctors visits they finally ran some tests and concluded that I had Mono.

No, thanks for asking, I have no idea where or how or I got it. :) Plus, I was 30 for crying out loud. I thought you couldn’t get Mono when you’re that old. Also, yes, it did take a very long time to completely get over it.

So yeah, that’s no fun but thankfully it’s long behind me now which makes it a prime candidate for our new series, Things I Didn’t Blog About at the Time.

I know I’m not the only person who misses the rounded screen corners in the latest version of Mac OS X. I think some clever developer had published a little app to restore them, even before 10.5 had shipped. (Here it is, Displaperture.) What I’d really like though is for the Mac OS to sport the same tiny rounded corners that the iPhone uses.

Have you noticed that the iPhone screen has rounded corners? The radius is really small, no more than 5 pixels I think. (Except when the keyboard is up. Then the bottom corners have a larger radius. Probably in order to wrap nicely around the bottom row of soft keys.)

No doubt there’s an ancient and epic struggle between UI nerds about whether to use rounded display corners. The iPhone approach is a nice compromise between being attractive and maximizing display real estate, so I hope they do something similar for the Mac.

It’s been a little over a week since we released the iPhone interface for TypePad. The buzz has been pretty good and I wanted to record some of it here. First though thanks to everyone at Six Apart for helping with everything from tweaks to the backend, to the marketing and PR. It was an extremely fun project to work on.
Since the introduction of the iPhone, we’ve been lamenting the
fact that Apple has left its über-phone out of the revolution in
user-generated content … It looks like the people at Six Apart,
creators of TypePad and Movable Type, would like to use the iPhone and
the iPod touch for content publishing, too. They announced today the

Hello.

Yesterday was iWalt.com’s eighth birthday. When I realized that and opened MarsEdit to write this post I realized that I’ve written only four, four, posts here in the last year. I’m not entirely sure what to make of that. There’s something paralyzing that comes with the knowledge that people are reading your blog and making judgments about what you write. But that’s why you’re writing, so that people who are interested can read it.

So let’s do some more writing.

Welcome to Year 8.

Happy birthday y’old website. We’ve had some good time together haven’t we? :)

I’ve started posting (and geotagging) the photos from our recent trip to Canada on Flickr and I’ve been posting links to del.icio.us more regularly since I discovered and tweaked Fraser Speirs’s Safari → del.icio.us AppleScript. (The tweaks just let me edit the title and fill in a description before it goes to del.icio.us.)

I’ve been aggregating the stuff from the other sites here on iWalt using Planet and naturally I’ve got the latest version of Movable Type installed to handle the weblog work. Jay, Brad, Gene, Luke and everyone on the MT team did an outstanding job with the 3.3 release and I can’t wait to see what they’re cooking up next.

Of course, most of my time is spent with TypePad which has had a bunch of great new features rolled out in the past few months and we’ve got a whole bunch more queued up for the near future. :)

What am I hoping for from Mac OS X 10.5 you ask?* Let’s see…

Speed. I’m hoping overall snappiness and zero pinwheeling were core goals of this release.

High-Resolution Interface. Do it Apple. Be the first. Blow our minds.

Finder. There are tons of great ideas floating throughout the internet for what do do with the Finder. I won’t reiterate them here.

Mail. Ever since I upgraded to 10.4.7, Mail crashes all the time when I’m deleting junk messages. That needs to stop. Otherwise, new toolbar button icons so we can all shut up and move on.

Safari. I’m hoping Safari has some gold-standard standards support up their sleeves. Also, some way of indicating download progress without popping up that obnoxious window.

iChat. Tabs, tabs, tabs. Ooh, and the ability to broadcast all or part of my screen rather than iSight video during a chat.

Address Book. There are things that irk me about Address Book but on the whole I’m happy with it.

iCal. I want that goddamn drawer to die.

Preview. I love you Preview. You saved PDF. Never change.

Boot Camp. Short of the ability to run Internet Explorer on a Mac without having to pay for Windows I couldn’t care less about Boot Camp, Parallels, or any other technology that enables me to run software I hate on the platform I love.

* No one asked. (Sniff!)

We gave our cat its first bath last Saturday. She was not amused. Right off the bat there was a lot of scrambling and yowling. As always, however, she refrained from any hissing or scratching. And once it became clear to her that our intention wasn’t to drown her in the bath water, she relaxed quite a bit. She did insist on keeping at least one but preferably both front paws firmly clawed around the edge of the tub just in case it became necessary to execute some kind of gymnastic feline freedom lunge.

On the whole, the procedure was a complete success and we suspect she can’t wait until her next bath. :)

Note: I would like apologize for this completely cat-centric post. (Complete with photo!) We’ll return to our regular internet-loving, Apple-drooling, site-tweaking, program in short order.

Tabitha and I went down to San Diego for the 4th of July weekend. We saw old friends (though not as many as we’d have liked), we visited the campus (though not as much of it as we’d have liked), we spent some time at the beach (though not for as long as we’d have liked). We ate well, listened to music, got tan, reminisced, were surprised by incredibly hot it was and how much we’ve adjusted to the chilly Bay Area.

This photo was taken at Balboa Park at 8:30 pm on Saturday, July 3rd. :)
